Illustration. The influence of Japanese Art on Western Art up to this date in a domino effect. I love the use of line and pattern with colour to imply a story which is to be queried and pondered and perhaps determined by the viewer. Does, for example, a geometric pattern say something differently (or expect a different attitude) than a floral pattern does? And what again if you take a floral pattern and organize it geometrically? And then again what happens when patterning is used and then given movement into space? What is a picture really?

In the end Art connects with the viewer. In essence a landscape brings the viewer in to a place they are interested in being through imagination....as does an abstraction.

You enter in....stay a while....leave...and then come back. Connection.

I believe that there was an exhibit of Japanese Prints at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1890 which many people would have seen. Out of interest here are two links to describe and showcase this influence:
